Peach Chutney

Chutney. Weird word. Sometimes I'm also weird and crave sweet with savory. One of my favorite "bad for you" recipes I came up with in my less healthier days is rosemary olive oil pound cake with savory caramel sauce and whipped cream (way too much sugar and refined ingredients- not to mention dairy which I am allergic to - however, I'm still proud enough of that not-so-healthy recipe to show you a pic.....don't worry- it was not taken recently :).
Other favorite sweet/ savory combos:
  • Rosemary with caramelized natural sugars
  • Cinnamon with Cumin, like in Moroccan food or my savory sweet potato crisps
  • Fruit with onion, like in the recipe below
  • Honey or almond butter with smoky flavors like smoked paprika and garlic, I heart this almond butter recipe

Peach Chutney

Yields about 1 ½ - 2 cups of chutney

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe peaches, diced (you can also use mangoes for a similar result :)
  • 2 tsp lime or lemon juice (I prefer the subtle taste of lime, but lemon will work as well)
  • 1 Tbsp honey or other sweetener (optional, see note*)
  • ¼ small Vidalia onion, diced (about 2-3 Tbsp)
  • 8-12 fresh basil leaves (about 1/4 cup)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • Pinch of course salt, or to taste (I used fleur de sel)

Method

  • *If you aren’t using honey, or replacing with stevia, go ahead and dice the peaches and toss with the lime juice 30 min.-1 hr. beforehand so that the natural sugars of the peaches make some good juice.
  • Stir all ingredients together and let marinate for at least 30 minutes
  • Serve over chicken, fish, or bread for a good sweet/ savory appetizer. The picture above is on this bread from Roost. I just replaced the eggs with 3 Tbsp chia seeds and 1/3 cup water to make it egg-free.

Do you have any sweet/ savory combos that totally float your boat?
